Allied health refers to a broad set of healthcare professionals who use scientific principles and evidence-based practice for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic diseases; promote disease prevention and wellness for optimal health, and apply administration and management skills to support health care systems in a variety of settings.

An allied health professional is a trained practitioner who delivers high-quality, patient-focused care in a range of settings. They are involved in the identification, evaluation, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders, dietary and nutrition services, and rehabilitation and health systems management.

Allied health services typically cover a broad range of therapeutic and support services. These may include physiotherapy, dietetics, occupational therapy, speech therapy, podiatry, psychology and others.

The list can vary depending on the source, but according to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, they include: Art Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Audiologists, Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians, Dietitians, Exercise Physiologists, Genetic Counselors, Occupational Therapists, Orthotists and Prosthetists, Physical Therapists, Radiologic Technologists, Respiratory Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists and Surgical Technologists.

The term “allied health” is generally used to signify a cluster of healthcare professions that encompass as many as 200 different jobs (excluding doctors, dentists, and nurses), but play a pivotal role in the healthcare team.
